FAER McAfee Scholar Award Program Competition 2017

22nd - 23rd June 2017

The project "IoT Based Health Monitoring System" from Dronacharya College of Engineering, Gurgaon was selected for presentation and demonstration during the "McAfee Scholar Award Program 2016 - 17" organized by the Foundation for Advancement of Education and Research (FAER). The students Shubham Rauthan(17777) and Shivani Rao (17776) from ECS Dept. along with the project guide Ms. Parul Bansal (Assistant Professor, ECE Dept.) presented their project during the event held at M.S. Ramaiah Institute of Technology, Bengaluru on 22nd - 23rd June 2017. They were among the top 27 teams selected for the finals.

The students presented and demonstrated the working of their project and competed against other projects from colleges like CSIR, Tamil Nadu; IIT Roorkee, Uttarakhand; Vel and Srinivas Institute of Technology, Karnataka.

The project IoT Based Health Monitoring System is an IOT based solution for healthcare by monitoring the health parameters on a regular basis. The system sends feeds to relatives and registered doctors for necessary intervention when required. The solution also has mechanisms to send alerts in case of an emergency situation to all stake holders. The project is a prototype of an IOT device to measure body parameters of the patient, feed data into a cloud repository, analyse, generate alerts and display information through web applications.

Special lectures by experts were organized during the event:

"Introduction to Deep Learning" by Mr.Thejaswi (Compute Developer Technology Engineer, NVIDIA Graphics Pvt. Ltd., Bengaluru): During his talk, Mr. Thejaswi covered the various aspects of deep learning and its applications in the field of connected vehicles and artificial intelligence. Deep learning is a type of artificial intelligence, in which computers are trained, rather than programmed, to solve a problem or complete a task. It’s an extremely powerful approach because it allows machines to make sense out of data, identify patterns and improve their accuracy over time. He mentioned India is capable of building technologies for the world and moving into the domain of significant high IT services. He also briefed the work being done by NVIDIA, which is a complex business with multiple domains. Our strategy aligns around our core compute platform, the GPU and being an AI compute company. This powerful, versatile processor is accelerating innovation across sectors, from gaming and VR to supercomputing and artificial intelligence.

"Recipes for the Innovator in You" by Dr. Dattatraya Kulkarni (Senior Principal Engineer, McAfee India): Dr. Dattatraya discussed the ordinary strokes shaping extraordinary leaders mentioning the three ingredients of innovator recipe and the common traits of innovators which is ABCD: Dreaming Big, Chasing hard, Believing in yourself and Actions non - stop. He also shared his experience of working with CDAC laying foundations for some cool compiler technologies and mentioned that after spending 20 years at UofT, IBM and Intel, he returned to India he found that there was little difference between bay area and Bangalore - every technology pioneer he had learned to respect in the bay area had a presence here in India along with a vibrant start up community. He also talked about the McAfee Innovation Center which is their bit to 'Design in India'.

The results for the presentation round were announced during the award ceremony in the august presence of several eminent personalities from industry and academics. The project was well appreciated by the judges and the students received a scholarship amount of Rs. 5000/- and certificates.

The event was a good learning experience for them to present their project work at a national platform.
